Important battles and events:Uncle Tom's Cabin- a novel published by Harriet Beecher Stowe that detailed the horrors of slavery; this novel furthered the abolitionist cause.
Harpers Ferry- an arsenal in Virginia that was attacked by John Brown in attempt to begin a slave uprising in the south. Battle of Fort Sumter- The first shots of the Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter, South Carolina. The Confederacy took the fort in 1861 and held it for four years. The Emancipation Proclamation - a speech given by Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863 that made the goal of the war effort to free slaves in "rebellious states". Battle of Gettysburg- The turning point of the Civil War; the Union forced General Lee to withdraw after three days of battle. The Atlanta Campaign- a series of battles in northern Georgia; the goal was to take the city of Atlanta and cut off Southern supply lines. Sherman's March to the Sea- the Union's attempt to "scare" citizens of Georgia into abandoning the war effort by showing force and capturing food stores; General Sherman and his men began in Atlanta and marched all the way to Savannah. Appomattox Court House Surrender- General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Confederate forces to Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865.
