The Atlanta Campaign
Atlanta was the center of railroads and factories for the Confederacy.
The Union sent General Sherman to begin a campaign on Atlanta to hurt the Confederates' important city in May 1864.
General Sherman took Atlanta in September
Sherman's March To the sea
After General Sherman took Atlanta, he made a march to Savannah known as Sherman's March to the Sea.
On his march, Sherman destroyed anything that would help the Confederates in the war - "total war".
Once he reached Savannah, he turned around to he back to the North.
Appomattox Court House
The Confederate soldiers were without supplies and a means to resupply their forces.
From the North, The Union soldiers continued to retrieve supplies.
On April 9th, 1865, General Lee met with General Grant at the Appomattox Court House in Virginia to surrender.
